WATKINSVILLE, GA — September 19, 2026
By the APEX Team
I'm still buzzing. Saturday night, APEX Coffee Bar turned into something I don't think any of us fully expected — a room packed with people who came out for it, the espresso machine hissing, and a bouldering wall lit up behind it all. The Bouldering Baristas: Latte Art Throwdown was the first of its kind here, and by the time the last pour landed, it felt like something that had always belonged in this town.
A throwdown has its own electricity. There's the hush when a barista sets the cup down and starts to pour, the crowd leaning in, the little gasp when the rosetta opens up just right. Then the whistle, the cheers, and the next competitor stepping up. Layer that on top of a climbing gym — people chalking up between rounds, friends cheering from the mats — and you get a night that doesn't really have a name yet. Chalk meets crema, and somehow it works.

Behind the bar, where the night was won and lost.
What moved me most was who showed up. Baristas traveled from Athens to Atlanta just to throwdown at our bar — some of them had never set foot in a climbing gym before, and by the end of the night they were cheering on sends like regulars. The drinks were genuinely beautiful: silky microfoam, clean lines, cups you almost didn't want to drink. But the craft on display was only half of it. The other half was the way this community treats each other.

Precision pours, all night long.

Between pours, the walls were calling.
Thank You to the Coffee Community
This night only happened because the Athens-area coffee community showed up — promoting, supporting, and competing. Thank you, sincerely.

So here's the part I'm most excited to write: we're going to do this again. The throwdown is coming back. Coffee, climbing, competition, and community — that's the whole spirit of it, and it turns out this town has plenty of all four. Keep an eye out for the next one, and come pour, climb, or just cheer. You'll be glad you did.
